A technical resource book that provides enough of an understanding of the
theory and concepts of HVAC design to facilitate basic design and selection of
components for houses and simple commercial systems. Loads and systems for
residences are presented in depth, including detailed examples of "The
House" which first appear where heat loss calculations are described.
Various heating and cooling systems for "The House" are then included
at the end of the appropriate sections. With regard to larger buildings,
"The Office" is used in various examples to compute cooling loads and
size systems throughout the volume. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc.

Book Description
The HVAC engineer today is faced with many challenges which include cost
constraints, indoor air quality, legal liability, and rapidly expanding building
code complexity. Too often designers are reluctant to learn and incorporate
newer technology because it is just one more thing that could go wrong. However,
when Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) are properly applied, they are a system
that can help the engineer overcome the many barriers to satisfying building
owners. The goal of this book is to assist GSHP designers in their efforts to
create high quality systems for commercial and institutional buildings at
reasonable costs.

From Booklist

Woodson focuses on the business of installing and servicing heating,
ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment, but his is really a primer
on starting any small business in the construction trades. He assumes his
readers know all about HVAC and want to become independent contractors. He
begins by discussing the advantages of drawing a salary versus those of owning a
business; cautions that you need clear goals concerning the income you expect
and the type of HVAC work you seek to do; suggests business structures
appropriate to varying situations (partnerships, sole proprietorships, etc.);
and clearly lays out legal and tax considerations. He talks money: cash
reserves, credit, bidding, accounts receivable, meeting competitors' prices, and
maintaining an inventory. He discusses setting up an office and the vexed
question, for small businesses, of employees and employee benefits. He offers
plans for securing jobs and tells you how to advertise. A direct, sensible guide
applicable everywhere in the U.S. John Mort
